CO2 fire suppression systems

CO2extinguishes the fire through physical means in accordance with two main principles. The first is through the reduction of the oxygen concentration inside the premises from 21% to below 15%, a level at which most fires cannot maintain combustion. The second mechanism is through cooling and heat absorption.

Inhalation of CO2, even in low concentrations, can cause asphyxia. This must be taken into account when protecting occupied spaces. With the necessary safety precautions in place, CO2 has been efficiently used for more than 50 years to protect areas such as transformers, archives, electrical hazards, tape storage and computer rooms. In some countries the regulations prohibit the automation of CO2 systems in occupied areas. Other countries allow it providing the area to be flooded can be evacuated when the alarm sirens go off.
